Wait Until Wednesday! Powell to Present Convincing Proof to UN

By D. LINDLEY YOUNG
February 3,  2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. (2/3) Be watching on Wednesday as Colin Powell presents the Bush case for war on Iraq to the UN (with the "new" and "compelling" evidence - not available to the Congress or the public). Bush, Powell, and Rumsfeld have told us all they can "possibly" tell without jeopardizing US security. We understand that. The UN will get the real scoop, but, no smoking gun according an article by Powell. Bush is risking some political capital and public confidence with the build up he has made concerning the compelling nature of the evidence he says he has to justify an immediate war on Iraq.

If Bush’s case is as “compelling” as Bush says, all countries of the UN will promptly rally in rank to Bush’s side and rush to demand that an attack on Iraq begin at once. After seeing the evidence - Bush gambles -  no nation would let so great an imminent threat exist, anywhere in the world, much less their back yards. They are only reluctant now because they have not seen all of the carefully guarded evidence.

Once the UN knows what Bush and Powell know, there will be a universal outcry from all members of the UN for immediate war. Forget inspections. Forget containment. Forget exile. Forget trying to get - or account - for tons and tons of WMD.

No reasonable person would have any other choice under the circumstances (only uniformed people oppose war). History will surely say, the US did everything possible to avoid Saddam's war for 12 years. The evidence for the necessity for the war was compelling. It's was Saddam's choice to be bombed - not the choice of the US. Saddam forced the US to the point of last last resort - war. There' was no other option, the US had to  lead the charge because others shrunk from their duties or became irrelevant.

Saddam is "the" clear threat to the world - a root of terrorism - a master behind the scenes who leaves no fingerprints. Any minute he may have "them" attack us all with devastation only those that "know" can "imagine."  Right now he's just holding his cards in a high stake poker game with Bush, but, he's crazy, unstable, ruthless - who knows what he may do at any moment.

Right now he will not account for WMD and, get this, and is even trying desperately (increased activity over the past few months) to get weapons to deter the US attack. That's proof enough for me. Let's go kick some butt.

Once the UN really learns about Saddam Hussein - from the horse’s mouth - an immediate multi-national war is inevitable. I would strongly support that war - even without seeing the "new" evidence - because that evidence convinced the UN that there is a convincing reason that we must strike Iraq now.

After Wednesday - if the Bush case is as convincing as touted - the US will no longer be accused of being unilateralist; or predatory, others will finally agreed that the threat is sufficiently imminent from Saddam poses and see the urgency that  war now is a must. We will no longer have to twist arms and make economic threats to get the UN, or anyone, to act willingly - for their very own safety and the safely of their people. The UN will finally see the evidence that Bush cannot tell us (because of security reasons, safety of agents and all) and at least they will finally know. Growing tensions between the US and others concerning the war on Iraq will be over. We will all be on the band wagon singing "Onward Christian Soldiers."

I see the headlines now, "Unanimous Demand by UN to Begin Attack on Iraq Now." The article will, of coarse, say how the UN cannot release the information provided to it by the US for security reasons, but, I will personally feel better, even though I cannot see the evidence - since others outside the US – whose safety is also at stake – agreed and that the evidence for immediate war on Iraq is convincing.
